Este cormorán grande, frecuenta en solitario el humedal de Salinas (Asturias). 

Parece que le gusta asear cuidadosamente sus plumas mientras toma el sol y no le desagrada la compañía de los patos azulones, mucho más ruidosos que él.

Lo he fotografiado en los meses de diciembre y enero.

Le gusta pescar en la ría de Avilés, donde se le puede ver nadando tranquilamente mientras vigila lo que pasa bajo las aguas. Cuando ve una pieza que le interesa se zambulle a profundidad y puede tardar en salir casi un minuto. Si el pez es pequeño se lo traga directamente en el fondo, pero si es grande lo saca a la superficie para deglutirlo más tranquilamente.

This big cormorant usually visits alone the wetland in Salinas (Asturias).

It seems to enjoy sunbathing at the same time he tidies up his feathers and it doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable with the blue ducks company, much noisier than him.

I took the photos in December, 2014 and January, 2015.

He likes fishing in the estuary of Avilés (Asturias), where you can see him swimming calmly while he keeps an eye on what happens underwater.

When he sees an interesting piece, he dives deep underwater and it may take almost a minute before he comes out.

If the fish is small, he bolts it down underwater, but if it is big, it is brought to the surface to swallow it.

El cormorán grande pertenece al orden de los pelecaniformes, familia: phalacrocoracidae,  especie: phalacrocorax carbo.

Hace auténticas contorsiones con el cuello para llegar hasta la última de sus plumas.

Las patas son fuertes y tienen membranas entre los dedos.

Extiende las alas para secarlas al sol y puede quedarse así durante un gran rato.

El pico, largo y fuerte, termina en forma ganchuda.

Los cormoranes crían de forma local en toda Europa.
